Resignation as National Secretary

After 33 years in the industry I tendered my resignation to the November meeting of the RTBU National Executive, effective from mid February 2005. Our Executive appointed National President and NSW Branch President Bob Hayden to the position.

Following lengthy discussions with my family I decided to address the work / family balance. Over 20 years as an elected National Official involves a lot of sacrifices by one's family due to the long hours and travel demands.

It has been a privilege to represent workers in our industry, the last 12 as National Secretary of the RTBU since its formation in 1993. The rank and file members of our proud Union entrust officials with a loyalty and respect which propels our endeavours.

Our members' interests in a globalised world are increasingly international, where the RTBU is recognised as a union which fights for its members and for social justice.

To all the members, delegates, officers and staff of the RTBU I extend warmest solidarity, and feel confident that the pillars of unity, an organising culture, education and militancy will ensure a strong union, respected by the members, the labour movement and the Australian community.
