With the creation of the Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union - the RTBU - in March 1993, two important things happened.

Part of the Environment Movement

The RTBU is clearly aligned with the environmental movement on the following issues: urban planning, freight transport, energy use, reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and social justice.

RTBU in 1990s

The RTBU is one of the 17 large unions directly represented on the ACTU Executive, giving rail, tram and bus workers a direct voice at that level for the first time in decades.

Developing a Land Transport Industry

The RTBU considers that the lack of an effective land transport industry policy is the biggest single failure of the eleven years of federal Labor government.

The Future of the RTBU

The union has been pushing for a broader transport industry union since the RTBU was formed, and has negotiated a federation of transport unions with the Transport Workers Union, which covers urban and long-distance truck drivers, and private sector bus operators.
