Sale of ATN Tasrail

By Rex Neil

For some considerable time now members at Tasrail have been held in suspense about their future employment, causing them significant anxiety, because of the non-conclusion in the sale process at ATN Tasrail.

Queensland Rail has apparently re-entered the chase with interest. Tasmanian Minister Paul Lennon said in late February that Ed Burkhardt, the former Chief Executive and largest shareholder of Wisconsin Central, was also very keen.

Altered shipping arrangements between Burnie, Devonport and Bell Bay have had a slight impact on container traffic, however other freight is reasonable.

Morale of employees is quite low. The restructured management has introduced assessment of staff in a less than satisfactory manner, which has not helped.
