Rail and Urban Public Transport – A New Policy for a New CenturySharan Burrow, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Penny Figgis, Vice-President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, and Megan Mitchell, Director of the Australian Council of Social Service joined with the RTBU on March 12, 2002, to launch a visionary plan for rail and urban public transport. Members of the NSW Locomotive Division Committee in attendance applauded the initiative.
"The Christie Reports on Sydney's public transport, the bailout of Connex and National Express in Melbourne's rail and tram network, and the joint privatisation of National Rail and FreightCorp have put rail and urban public transport on the front page, but the Howard government has nothing to say," said Sharan Burrow. Penny Figgis slammed Australia's high use of transport energy: "Federal funding for sustainable transport is essential". Roger Jowett, National Secretary of the Rail Tram & Bus Union said: "This launch marks the beginning of the Union's campaign to gather a broad community coalition calling for political leadership on rail and urban public transport".
